Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and cabinet ministers held a news conference in Columbus, Ohio on Tuesday to update the catastrophic train derailment in East Palestine that occurred on Feb. 3, which spewed toxic chemicals into the environment.
DeWine said that he’s learned the train was not considered a “high hazardous material train,” which allegedly meant that the railroad was not required to notify anyone in Ohio about what was in the railcars coming to the state. “Frankly, if this is true and I’m told it’s true, this is absurd. And we need to look at this and Congress needs to take a look at how these things are handled,” DeWine said.
Mary Morris, the director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, outlined the department’s concerns with the aquatic wildlife, estimating that about 3500 fish across 12 different species have died throughout the region as an impact of the incident. Morris added that “the good news is that none of those species are threatened or endangered, but that is still a loss of wildlife.”
Bruce Vanderhoff, the director of the Ohio Department of Health, also urged people on private wells to get the water tested, which he added would be done at no cost. Vanderhoff also said that he “strongly recommended” those who have not had their water tested to use bottled water that is being made available for free, especially for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or preparing formula for infants
