Following the untimely passing of Ryan Mallett in June, the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Baltimore Ravens have been forced to express their condolences for the loss of another former player this summer in the person of Alex Collins.
On Monday night, the Ravens made the tragic announcement that Collins had passed away at the age of 28. It was later discovered that Collins had been died in a motorbike accident.
The death of the native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida comes just over a month after the drowning death of Mallett, which occurred on June 27 when he was on vacation in Destin, Florida earlier this summer.Mallett ‘began struggling while attempting to swim to a second sandbar approximately 150 feet offshore of the beach near Gulf Shores Drive in Destin,’ according to the detectives working for the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office who looked into the incident.
It was initially believed that the man, who was 35 years old, had been swept away by a riptide. However, Destin Beach Safety issued a statement saying that there were no riptides in the region around where Mallett was located, and they referred to his passing as a ‘tragic accident.’
According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Collins was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban SUV on Sunday night when he smashed into the rear passenger side of the vehicle, went through the window, and came to rest inside the vehicle. Collins spent his whole career in the National Football League with the Seattle Seahawks.
It was determined that he had passed away at the site.Collins was a standout for the Razorbacks throughout his college career from 2013 to 2015, finishing with the third-highest single-season running total in the school’s annals. He then spent 2017 and 2018 playing for the Ravens. In a game against Ole Miss while playing college football, the running back is credited with converting a 4th-and-25 situation to help his team win in overtime.
Mallett played college football for Arkansas from 2008 to 2010 and then served as a backup quarterback for Baltimore from 2015 until 2017.
In a statement released on Monday night, the Ravens expressed their sorrow over the loss of Alex Collins by saying, “With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Alex Collins.” He was the kind of person that would always be the first to greet everybody and everyone with a smile, and he was someone who brought a unique enthusiasm and passion with him wherever he went.
May Alex always be remembered for the light and love he brought to so many people in his life,” a friend said on his Facebook page.
The Razorbacks released the following statement: “We are so saddened by the unexpected and tragic passing of Alex Collins.” He was a Razorback player with a great reputation and an even better person.
