The Seattle Seahawks organization is in grief following the passing of former teammate and fan favorite Alex Collins, who played for the Seahawks on two separate occasions.
On Monday, Collins, who was 28 years old, passed unexpectedly as the result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Alex Collins this morning,” the Collins family said in a statement. “Alex was loved and admired by his family, friends, and fans from all over the world. His passion, his tenacity, and his personality are both larger than life, as can be attested to by anyone who knows him well. During this trying time, we would greatly appreciate it if you would keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. We ask that you respect our need for privacy as we work through our loss. As new information becomes available, we will keep you apprised of any developments about the funeral arrangements.
John Schneider, the executive vice president and general manager of the Seattle Seahawks, expressed the team’s deep sorrow at the news of Alex’s passing. “The Seahawks family along with the 12s are so saddened to hear of Alex’s passing,” Schneider stated. The captivating smile and classic river dancing talents that Alex possessed will be sorely lost for all time. Alex’s smile could brighten up any space, and he was well liked throughout the entire facility. He had a positive outlook on life and played football as if it were a game. He was one of the runners with the most victories in the annals of SEC competition. Our deepest sympathies go out to his immediate family, the Gatewood family, and Kelli Masters, who represented him in the industry. Alex, you will be remembered and missed always. Rest in peace, brother, on behalf of Jody Allen, Pete Carroll, Chuck Arnold, Chad Morton, and the whole Seahawks community.
Collins was drafted in the fifth round by the Seahawks in 2016, and after spending some time with the Baltimore Ravens, he came back to play for the Seahawks in 2020 and 2021. During his time with the Seahawks, he earned accolades from both his teammates and the coaches for his contributions to the running game. In the year 2021, the Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll commented, “He’s got a great spirit that he brings to the team.” “He’s making fantastic progress. I have a lot of enthusiasm for him.”
Collins also became a fan favorite in Seattle for his huge smile and cheery temperament, as well as his famous Irish dance touchdown celebration. This celebration was an homage to the activity that he participated in previous to his NFL career in order to improve his footwork.
Collins, who was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, went to the University of Arkansas after having a stellar career at South Plantation High School. One of only three players in the history of the Southeastern Conference to rush for more than 1,000 yards in each of three straight seasons, Carroll loved to emphasize this fact when talking about Collins.
Collings’s celebrated touchdowns with an Irish jig dance, which became famous during the course of his NFL career, garnered a lot of attention. He stated in an interview with the CBS Evening News that he learnt the Irish dance from the daughter of the football coach at his high school.
Collins has stated in previous interviews that he was made fun of for the dance, but he believes that the Irish jig has helped him improve his performance on the field. The former running back in the NFL mentioned that it assisted him with his footwork.
In 2017, Collins offered words of support and encouragement to a young boy of the same age who was being bullied for his interest in Irish dance.
On social media, Collins stated in part, “Never stop doing the things you love just because someone else [doesn’t] agree,” and she encouraged others to take her advice.
