Aphasia is a loss of language ability following traumatic brain injury or stroke. As Tracy Shannon, PsyD, a rehabilitation psychologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, explains, there are different types of aphasia. Expressive aphasia is loss of the ability to find the words you need to communicate. Receptive aphasia is when there is an inability to understand. Global aphasia encompasses all those issues.
