When it comes to self-care, grooming tops the list. While appearance isn’t everything, there’s just something about looking good that makes you feel good. Strutting around as the hottest version of yourself is gratifying, validating, and fun. And if you’ve ever had a bad haircut (one that makes you fly out of the salon in tears halfway through your blowout… no, just me?), you know how it can ruin your mood. A whole mood!
Well, your dog is no different — and they happen to have a lot more hair. Choosing the best groomer for your dog isn’t the same as picking out a pet-friendly restaurant or a dog-friendly hotel; you can get over a bad meal or a bad night’s sleep. But, a bad haircut? It lasts fur-ever! That’s why we put together a list of the best groomers in NYC so you don’t have to sift through pages of Yelp reviews with contradictory comments. Remember to call ahead if you’ve got a unique breed with beautiful hair that requires a specific type of grooming. Groomers are not one-size-fits-all!
1. Groomit
When it comes to convenience, you really can’t beat a groomer that comes to you. With an easy-to-use app that allows you to schedule your appointment whenever and wonderful certified groomers, Groomit is at the top of the list of NYC groomers. You can choose between three different packages for your dog or cat with fun add-ons that allow you to personalize the experience. They currently travel to all boroughs except Staten Island (sorry Staten Island).
2. Luxury Groomer
Another groomer that will come to your home (if you live in Manhattan) is Luxury Groomer, whose name truly describes what they do. Service includes the normal: bathing, drying, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and haircuts, but they offer facial scrubs, teeth brushing, deep conditioning, and calming CBD drops as well! They also happen to have the famous vet Dr. Lisa Lippman on call, which is not too shabby! It’s cat and dog friendly and services are planning to expand into parts of Brooklyn soon.
3. Towne House Grooming
Chelsea 288 8th Ave. New York, NY 10001
This Chelsea-based dog groomer has been operating for 40 years, and there’s a reason they’ve been around that long. They strive to give your pet the best experience possible and are trained to groom dogs of any breed or pattern (and cats too!). For dogs, they offer two levels of service (mini and full) and for cats, they have a basic bath and brush with plenty of add-ons. They also offer walk-in services if the mood strikes!
4. Doggy Stylez Grooming
Yorkville 356 E 87th St. New York, NY 10128
This a-dog-able groomer proclaims itself to be your best friend’s best friend and we have to agree. Located in Yorkville, Doggy Stylez has a small team that will give your pup the attention they deserve. They offer two grooming packages — bath & full groom — as well as additional services that include teeth brushing, flea & tick treatment, and nail polish. All so your dog feels as fresh as can be.
5. Groomingdales
Upper East Side 349 E 82nd St. New York, NY 10028
Groomingdales is more than a fantastic name (we do love a good pun!), it’s also a fantastic place to get your dog or cat groomed. Although they specialize is poodles and bichons, Groomingdales accepts all breeds. They offer pet owners a consultation before lifting a scissor, ensuring that there are no surprises when your pup comes back from the salon. And, in this case, we don’t like surprises.
6. Le Pet Spa
FiDi 300 Rector Pl. New York, NY 10280
Located in Battery Park City, Le Pet Spa has been offering grooming since 1991. They offer two grooming services (bath & groom and full groom) depending on your budget or general needs. They also offer a variety of individual services, like a facial trim, ear & teeth cleaning, and gland expression. Bonus: they also sell pet food and supplies so you only have to leave the house once.
7. Kiki’s Pet Spa & Boutique
Clinton Hill 239 Dekalb Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11205
This Brooklyn-based pet complex offers the works: grooming, doggy daycare, boarding, dog walking & cat sitting, behavioral training, and more. They offer a full groom or a simpler express bath & brush; prices vary between breed and size of dog. Despite being large, Kiki’s Pet Spa offers a personal touch, even featuring satisfied and adorable customers on their site. It gets busy on the weekends, so make sure to book in advance.
8. Downtown Doghouse
Chelsea & Gramercy
If you’re looking to pull out all the stops, Downtown Doghouse has you covered. They provide expert grooming in a spa setting. Aside from offering skilled hand scissoring and hand stripping, they also offer show cuts (hello Westminster!), blueberry facials, hydrosurge massages, and fun personalization techniques. If you want your pup to walk out with a blue mohawk, you’ve found your new favorite groomer. They also groom well-behaved cats!
9. Walter’s Pet Styles
Murray Hill 201-C E 33rd St. New York, NY 10016
Walter’s Pet Styles opened its doors in 2007 and has been servicing NYC’s pampered pooches ever since. They offer grooming services as well as doggy daycare and overnight boarding. They have three packages (basic, mini, and full) as well as hands tripping and cat services. Add on any of their premium specialties, like dead sea scrub and degreasing. They also promise free treats and belly rubs, so it’s a good time all around!
10. Pampered Pooch Place
Astoria 4320 Broadway, Queens, NY 11103
There is no limit to the services this Queens-based groomer offers: doggy daycare, pet taxi, veterinary, training, shopping, portrait artists, etc. You could basically live there — especially if you’re a dog. Their grooming services come in five packages of varying options for any budget. And, despite all their many offerings, Pampered Pooch Palace still promises to provide individual and personalized care to every pet they see. And that’s what we like to hear!
