I’m going to be “cancelled” for this I fear, but at least I won’t be alone. Lizzo is in hot water for using the word “sp*z” in her new song Grrrls. The word is considered a slur by some, especially in the United Kingdom. However, in the United States, especially in AAVE. the word has a different definition, meaning to loose control or to freak out. The ableist origins of the term don’t seem to be known by many Americans, so is it really fair to cancel Lizzo if she were simply unaware? We’ll have to watch closely to see how Lizzo handles the situation, and whether she accepts being educated on the fact that her actions were hurtful to some. I think this is a moment to learn, but not at all “cancel” worthy.
