What is a Human Dog Bed?

If you’ve never seen a human dog bed before, imagine a giant dog bed that is big enough to fit you in it. It looks just like a donut dog bed, but is oval shaped. As such, it fits a human lying down.

Kids can fully stretch out. Me? I cuddle up and relax.

Human dog beds are made up of a mattress bottom layer that’s surrounded by bolster pillows to form a cozy wall. The cover is plush and soft so you can snuggle into it.

Why Buy a Human Dog Bed?

Our dog’s bed has been the kids’ favorite hang out spot for quite a while now. In fact, the kids like the dog bed so much that they sat in it more than they used our couch.

It’s no secret that I think dog beds are a great piece of kids furniture. The covers are washable, there are no hard corners, and they are cheaper than a real sofa. But most importantly, the kids can climb and jump all over it.

Originally, I wanted to buy two additional dog beds, so each kid could have their own. However, while searching for giant dog beds, I discovered I could buy one big enough for both kids to fit in.

What are Human Dog Beds Made Of?

Most human dog beds are made up of a mattress base, bolster pillows that go around, and a removable cover. Different brands construct them differently. I looked at a lot of them, and break down some of the differences below.

Mattress base

The quality and materials vary tremendously between brands. Some are more bed like. Others can be more similar to a dog bed shaped bean bag.

We like the Plufl because the mattress is a Certi-PUR orthopedic foam with a gel-infused cooling air memory foam topper.

Some other human dog beds use only an egg crate foam or a simple sponge mattress. You can even find ones that use small shredded foam (cut off pieces), so it’s more like a bean bag.

The bases also differ in thickness. The one we have is 4” thick, which is plenty comfortable.

Bolster

Bolster pillows also differ in human dog beds.

Some bolsters are made from a single piece of foam. Others use shredded foam (cut off pieces), so the bolster is like a bean bag. Some human dog beds don’t have a full 360° bolster, and it only goes halfway around.

Again, we like the Plufl because it’s comprised of two long polyester cotton stuffed bolster pillows that are supportive. The bolsters go into their own zip compartment so they don’t shift and move around.

Cover

Most all human dog bed covers are made from a plush polyester fabric. I couldn’t find much difference between the various brands besides color and pattern.

However, one noteworthy difference I found is that Plufl uses a Oeko-Tex certified fabric. I researched at least 10 different brands, and didn’t see other brands mentioning Oeko-Tex certified fabric.

Since the kids roll around in it and rub their faces all over it, it’s comforting to know that the fabric is certified non-toxic.

The Plufl also has a removable and washable cover. Most of the human dog beds I came across also have this feature, but not all.

Is It Suitable for Adults or Kids?

Both!

Our kids play with the human dog bed all the time. It’s a great piece of play furniture. I have seen them do a lot of pretend play with it. Not surprisingly, it has sparked so much imagination.

The human dog bed can be a:

• boat, or pirate ship
• a car, to take a long road trip
• a house
• a vet office

But when the kids aren’t around, I like to lounge and read in it too. I often move it to where the sun shines through the window. In addition, it’s a great place to dump clean laundry and sit and fold.

If you take a look on Amazon, it sells many brands. I spent multiple hours researching all the human dog beds before we bought ours. After reading though the descriptions and reviews of most all the human dog beds on Amazon, we decided the Plufl was the best option.

What are Cons to Buying a Human Dog Bed?

So I listed out a lot of reasons why human dog beds are great! But surely, there must be some cons. There aren’t many. But here they are:

• Your naps might last too long
• The kids might not want to get out of it when you tell them to go to bed
• Every kid might want their own, so you might end up with multiples

Joking aside, the only real con we have discovered is that sometimes the kids get built up with a lot of static electricity when they roll around it it too much. They like to shock me when I walk by them.

Also, a human dog bed does take up a bit of floor space. For safety, you’ll likely want to make sure you have some clearance around it so the kids don’t bump into other furniture corners.

Plufl isn’t exactly cheap. But it’s cheaper than buying 2 quality dog beds. And it’s cheaper than buying a couch.

Plufl vs Nugget

If you are looking for play furniture, the last thing you might want to consider is whether you might want a Plufl or Nugget couch.

We have both. They sit next to each other. The Plufl is right in front of the fireplace. The Nugget is next to it, against the window. Here’s how it plays out in our home.

Play

The Plufl invites for simpler play than the Nugget.

While the Nugget can be constructed into a fort, boat, or other pieces, we find it takes an adult to do so. The kid’s can’t do it on their own.

The Plufl invites more quick creative play for our kids. It’s always there, ready for them to jump into it. It’s also easier because it’s a single piece of furniture.

Sleeping

The human dog bed makes for a good sleepover bed. Kids who come over ask to sleep in it overnight. We definitely need another one so we can do it!

However the Nugget also works great for sleepovers. Since it’s made of two big pieces of foam, we can use the Nugget for two kid sleepovers. It also works better for taller kids, and for kids who want to use sleeping bags.

For short naps, the Plufl wins.

Reading

We have both the Plufl and the Nugget next to one another, and by the kids books. The kids chose the human dog bed for self-reading every single time.

However, when I read to them, I like the Nugget because I can lean back. Plus it’s a bit more spacious so I can have one kid on each side of me.
