In another milestone in the unprecedented decline in mutual relations, it now seems that Russia will be adding hostage-taking to its list of aggravating moves vis-a-vis the United States. For the first time since the Cold War, an American journalist was arrested in an espionage case. Evan Gershkovich, an experienced reporter working for the Wall Street Journal, now faces a prison term of up to 20 years if convicted. Knowing how the Russian legal system works, the whole thing is unlikely to be a coincidence. What fate could await the detained reporter, and what does it tell us about the relations between Russia and the US?
