Hot Dogs Wrapped In Bacon
We first discovered bacon-wrapped hot dogs years ago while attending a game at the Los Angeles Coliseum. There were vendors everywhere pushing street carts, selling delicious grilled hot dogs, wrapped in a slice of bacon and topped with sizzling peppers. The amazing smells coming off their baking sheets convinced us to try them.
My children’s lives and our hot dog worlds were forever changed! I recreated our street food from L.A. as soon as we got home! Over the years we have served these dogs so many times at BBQs with our neighbors and friends. Each time we make them they are always the first ones to go! If you’ve never spoiled your taste buds with one of these, you have to make them!
How To Make Bacon-Wrapped Hotdogs
INGREDIENTS –
- hot dogs
- bacon – pork bacon or turkey bacon are both delicious!
- toppings – peppers + onions are a must, and you can add your favorite condiments if you’d like! Ketchup, mustard, relish, BBQ sauce, avocado, tomatoes, lettuce, jalapeño, chopped cilantro, etc.
- buns
Wrap The Dogs – First, wrap 1-2 strips of bacon around each hot dog. Tuck the first end of the bacon under the first wrap-around, then place it on a pan or plate so the other end is under the hot dog, as shown above.
Grill’em – Next, cook your dogs. I will typically grill the hot dogs on my outdoor barbecue. Just be sure to rotate them while they’re cooking so they don’t burn. See below for other cooking methods!
Saute Vegetables – While your hot dogs are grilling, start sauteing your peppers and onions. You can do this over a stove in a pan, or you can toss them on the grill. If you cook them on the grill, put the peppers and onions onto a sheet of foil, add a few slabs of butter or drizzle with olive oil, then bring up the sides of the foil to make a packet. This foil packet can go right on the grill next to your hot dogs!
Toppings – Our favorite way to serve them is with grilled onions, and peppers, but you can add any of your other favorite toppings and condiments.
Recipe Tips
How To Keep The Bacon From Unraveling – When you transfer them to the grill or pan, place it on the heat with the ends of the bacon facing down to keep the bacon from unwrapping. If it does unwrap, pin it with a toothpick.
Timing – Depending on how many you have, the peppers and onions usually take longer to cook than your hot dogs. I will typically prepare the vegetables first and put them on the grill while it’s warming up to give them a head start.
How To Cook Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs In The Oven – If you prefer to cook your hot dogs inside, you can easily do it in the oven. Place the prepared dogs onto a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper. Bake them in the oven at 400 degrees F for about 13-15 minutes until they are cooked throughout.
How To Make Them In A Frying Pan – Another easy way to cook these hot dogs indoors is in the frying pan. Heat your cooking oil in the pan until it reaches 350 degrees. Place the wrapped hot dogs in the oil and cook them for about 3-5 minutes. These will cook fast so make sure you’re watching them and rotating them in the pan.
Air Fryer Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs – Lay the hot dogs in a single layer on your air fryer basket with space between them so they crisp up on all sides. Air Fry at 380°F for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking process. Continue to air fry for 2 minutes or more if you want your dogs extra crispy.
