Mobs enraged by spiralling prices ransacked shops and homes belonging to ethnic Chinese in two central Indonesian cities Friday (12/2). They destroyed buildings and torched cars, police and residents said.
In Sukamandi the power supply was cut in a day of rioting. Dozens of shops were destroyed, 15 cars burned and the glass-strewn streets were packed with people.
The city of Pamanukan were covered with debris but almost deserted late Friday. Some of those who sought shelter in the local police station said Chinese Christians were being attacked at will. Most remained in hiding late Friday.
