Republican Mayra Flores on Tuesday was projected to defeat Dan Sanchez (D) in the special election for Texas’s 34th Congressional District, a traditional Democratic stronghold.

Flores will head to Washington to serve out the remainder of Vela’s term. She will face Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D), who currently represents the state’s 15th Congressional District, for a redrawn 34th Congressional District in November.
