Missing Princeton student Misrach Ewunetie was found dead Thursday — six days after she vanished, local officials announced. The 20-year-old’s body was found behind the tennis courts near the edge of the Ivy League campus by a facilities employee, the office of the Mercer County Prosecutor said. Authorities said they do not know her cause of death but noted that “there were no obvious signs of injury and her death does not appear suspicious or criminal in nature.” Her body was located around 1 p.m. Thursday. The Ivy League school also said in a statement that police do not believe there was foul play in Ewunetie’s death. “Misrach’s death is an unthinkable tragedy. Our hearts go out to her family, her friends and the many others who knew and loved her,” Princeton VP W. Rochelle Calhoun said. “Princeton is a close-knit community, and we mourn Misrach together.” The school is planning on hosting an event in Ewunetie’s memory, Calhoun said, though the details have not yet been released. The high-achieving student was last seen on Oct. 14 and her disappearance sparked an intense statewide manhunt in New Jersey. She had been volunteering at one of Princeton’s exclusive eating clubs the night before she vanished, according to the student newspaper The Daily Princetonian. After the club had closed and all of the duty responsibilities had been fulfilled, Misrach—as well as the other members on duty—left for the night,” the eating club said in a statement. Authorities had deployed drones and watercraft to comb through the school’s sprawling grounds. Ewunetie, a junior at the elite school, was last seen in the early morning brushing her teeth in Scully Hall. Her brother said her phone had pinged near an off-campus housing complex about a 30 minute walk from her dorm before it went silent. Police scoured the housing complex three times with no luck, and school officials had sent out multiple alerts urging anyone with information on her disappearance to come forward. Ewunetie’s family, who are originally from Ethiopia and now live in Ohio, alerted authorities on Saturday after they learned she’d missed an appointment for her US citizenship application. Her family reported her missing on Saturday. Misrach Ewunetie was last seen on Oct. 14. Ewunetie’s LinkedIn profile said she was studying sociology with a certificate in the “Applications of Computing.” “I aim to bring value to the corporate world through innovative problem solving and data analysis skills that will continue to grow as I pursue my education at Princeton,” she wrote in her bio. The star student spent her past two summers interning at McKinsey & Company’s Ohio office as a summer business analyst. Ewunetie went missing Oct. 14 — her body was later found on the Princeton tennis courts Thursday. She enrolled in Princeton in the fall of 2020 and was set to graduate in 2024. On campus, she was a member of the Pre-College Research Institute, the Princeton Ethiopian and Eritrean Student Association, and a group called Matriculate, which according to its website matches students with “low-income, high achieving high schoolers to serve as virtual advisers for them through the college application process.” This is a developing story.
