Your pet’s skin health is one of the key priorities in medical grooming, which includes skin diagnostic tests, customised skin treatments, and uses hypoallergenic vet-approved shampoos. If required, it may also include veterinary advice and consultation.
All pets, regardless of their species and breed, will require customised and unique care to ensure their physical and emotional well-being. This applies to not just their veterinary care, but also their pet grooming needs. What do we mean by customised care in pet grooming? For example, one dog may need a thorough ear cleaning, while another dog may require anal gland expression if he has been scooting at home. A cat that has heavily matted fur will need to be shaved, while another could have overgrown claws (nails) with deep paw pad wounds that require extra care and medical attention.
Trained, trusted professionals in a medical grooming team
All such grooming procedures should be done by trained professionals. Ideally, the professional should also adopt a Fear-Free approach during the pet grooming session, to minimise fear, stress, and anxiety in the pet. To learn more about what Fear-Free is, refer to this article here.
Veterinary nurses, vet technicians, and medical groomers are professionals with a practised eye. They are trained and able to spot any lumps and bumps of concern, skin allergies, skin infections, irritations or soreness, and so on — things that other individuals tend to easily miss or not pay attention to.
In addition, beyond the pet’s grooming needs, vet nurses are also able to advise pet owners about other concerns that pet owners may have, such as medical, behavioural, or dietary issues.
At the Medical Grooming Centre in Singapore, the professionals involved in your pet’s care include vet nurses, technicians, and medical groomers. Veterinarians also play a part in your pet’s medical grooming care when necessary.
Located in Yishun, the Medical Grooming Centre is affiliated with Paws N’ Claws Veterinary Surgery, one of the few Fear-Free certified vet clinics in Singapore.
Medical grooming vs normal grooming for pets
Here’s a glance at the differences between medical grooming and normal or traditional grooming:
What this means is that the Medical Grooming Centre in Singapore can basically be a one-stop shop for your pet’s care — you can get professional advice, veterinary attention (if needed), customised grooming and skin care, flea and tick prevention, and more.
When is medical grooming recommended for your pet?
1. Skin issues — skin diagnostic tests are part of medical grooming. These tests determine whether any skin or ear infections are present, such as ringworm infections, as well as food or environmental allergens, external parasites, and other skin problems.
After the skin diagnostic tests are done, a customised plan will be provided to manage your pet’s skin problem(s). At the Medical Grooming Centre in Singapore, this customised plan may include medications, supplements, frequency of bathing, what type of pet shampoo to use, and even dietary changes, if required.
Such a customised treatment or management plan for skin issues are not part of normal pet grooming services in Singapore.
2. Anxious pets — Animals who tend to be more anxious or stressed out when they are out of home will require Fear-Free handling, be it when visiting the vet or the groomer. Sometimes, sedatives or pre-visit anti-anxiety medications may also be needed. This is to ensure the safety of your pet, yourself as the pet owner, and the medical grooming or veterinary team.
Importantly, Fear-Free methods, pre-visit anti-anxiety medications, and sedation are also meant to prevent traumatic experiences at the grooming centre, especially for anxious pets. At the Medical Grooming Centre in Singapore, we prioritise the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of your pet. We want to minimise your fur kid’s fear, stress, and anxiety and make the visit as pleasant as possible for everyone.
3. Large or senior dogs — It isn’t always easy to get a big dog into the bath tub for a shower. It can also be tricky or challenging when the dog is older and has trouble moving around. Besides, senior dogs are often very stiff, sore, and fragile.
This is why, at the Medical Grooming Centre in Singapore, special anti-slip bath mats are used so as to ensure adequate grooming for large and/or senior dogs. The team makes sure to take extra care and caution during the session.
