On October 17, 1989, Northern California was rocked by a 6.9 earthquake that became known as the Loma Prieta Earthquake. Its epicenter was located on a section of the San Andreas Fault and caused heavy damaged to Santa Cruz County, the San Francisco Bay Area and Oakland. This was the first earthquake in the United States to have been televised live since it happened as Game3 of the 1989 World Series was about to begin.
