Yes, it was a difficult but necessary discussion. We have common values and principles that all EU member states should respect. https://www.eudebates.tv/ This is about fundamental rights, human rights and the rights of minorities. It was an emotional and difficult discussion. I highlighted the importance of open societies, of human rights and the importance of respecting the rights of sexual minorities in all member states.

I think I would be good to strengthen the dialogue. We need to ask ourselves how well the current model has worked. The 5 principles are important and need to be followed up on before discussions can be deepened. But it’s important to open avenues for dialogues; the EU cannot be left aside when Russia and USA are opening channels.
I understand that there are different points of view and different concerns – the topic is very sensitive. The proposal from Germany and France was necessary, it’s good to discuss this subject, but the time was not ripe. Hopefully the discussion can be continued and move on towards a discussion between EU heads of state and Russia.
Yes, I think it’s very possible we come back to this. At the same time yesterday, we adopted conclusions that are balanced and can be supported.
We will hear an update on the banking union and discuss recovery – what member states are doing to ensure recovery. We will hear an update on that. There are draft conclusions to be discussed on that.
The risk I see is rather that we will not succeed in modernising the structure of our economies and in the green and digital transition. We must use this opportunity to strengthen the structures of our economy and to respond to the challenges of our times like climate change. Recovery is necessary and important – the EU recovery measures come on top of national ones and it’s important that we coordinate it and apply a tight conditionality that Finland has strongly supported, namely the green transition the digital transition and rule of law conditionality.
It looks like we are on schedule. The Finnish recovery plan will be approved around early autumn and from there we will start implementing it. Finland has presented its plan to the Commission in May. Member states present their plans and we look at them together.
The discussions were quite lengthy and different member states have different opinions on at what level of dialogue should be happening. Last night we agreed on conclusions and this is where we stand today.
I think it was a good and important initiative. Yesterday wasn’t the right time yet and we will discuss this further in the future.
I don’t think this is the issue here. The discussion about Hungary and LGBT rights was quite difficult but it was needed. We need to make sure that all EU citizen’s fundamental rights are respected and this is why this discussion was necessary despite difficult.
