**THIS IS A RAPIDLY DEVELOPING AND PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION.**
Damaging tornadoes are spinning up throughout the line of severe storms, which is itself producing 90mph winds!! These tornadoes are very difficult to predict, and most tornado warnings issued will have short lead times.

TREAT THE ENTIRE LINE AS IF IT WERE A TORNADO, and seek shelter underground or in an interior room immediately if you are in a severe thunderstorm warning! Your life may depend on it.

A major severe weather event is unfolding across the Central Great Plains this afternoon, with a damaging line of Severe Thunderstorms already producing 90mph straight line winds across parts of Nebraska and Kansas, as it rapidly moves Northeastward towards Iowa, Northwest Missouri and Southern Minnesota. This line is likely to develop into a derecho, and full attention must be paid to this developing threat by those in the Storm Prediction Center’s risk areas – especially within the Tornado and Severe Thunderstorm Watches.

Potentially life threatening winds may occur well outside the moderate and enhanced risk areas, so if you are under a severe thunderstorm warning take action immediately to protect yourself. Do not be outside, in a car or in a mobile home during a severe thunderstorm warning; take all animals indoors and keep away from windows and doors. Shelter in an interior room until the storms have passed you.

Tornadoes are also expected with this dangerous storm system – many have already been confirmed by radar and storm spotters. If you are put under a tornado warning please seek shelter immediately in an interior room; a basement or storm shelter is best but if you do not have access to these a bathroom or closet is the next best shelter. Do not be outside, in a car or in a mobile home during a tornado. Remain in your safe place until after the storms have passed.

Key locations in the Moderate Risk area include: Omaha NE, Des Moines IA, Rochester MN, Waterloo IA, Council Bluffs IA

Key locations in the Enhanced Risk area include: Lincoln NE, Cedar Rapids IA, Sioux City IA, Eagan MN, Eau Claire WI

Key locations in the Slight Risk area include: Minneapolis MN, St. Paul MN, Bloomington MN, Plymouth MN, St. Joseph MO

Key locations in the Marginal Risk area include: Kansas City MO, Tulsa OK, Madison WI, Overland Park KS, Rockford IL

Due to the extreme conditions present today, any storm has the potential to produce life-threatening winds, and as such anyone in the risk areas must pay close attention to the watches and warnings. If possible turn on emergency weather alerts now for your phone or computer.

It may be December, but dangerous severe weather can happen at anytime of the year, and this event is just as big a threat as any other moderate risk issued by the Storm Prediction Center.
