Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith died Friday morning in Nashville. She was 68.

“It was Nanci’s wish that no further formal statement or press release happen for a week following her passing,” Gold Mountain Entertainment said in a statement. Griffith survived cancer twice in the 1990s.

Nanci Caroline Griffith was born July 6, 1953, raised in Austin, Texas, and lived in Nashville, Tennessee before her passing. Griffith performed many times on the PBS music program Austin City Limits kicked off in 1985 (season 10).

Nanci’s career had spanned a variety of musical genres, predominantly country, folk, and what she terms “folkabilly. She won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1994 for her recording, Other Voices, Other Rooms. In this album, Griffith covered the songs of artists who are her major influences.

While a powerful singer in her own right, Griffith was arguably better known for her songs like “Love at the Five and Dime” (which was a country hit for Kathy Mattea) and “Outbound Plane” (ditto Suzy Bogguss) and as a collaborator: She recorded duets with Emmylou Harris John Prine, Willie Nelson, the Chieftans, Darius Rucker, and many others over the course of her four-decade career. Her Grammy was for an album consisting of classic country covers, “Other Voices, Other Rooms.”

Although no official sources have clarified Nanci Griffith’s cause of death at this time, some claim she recently had health problems, which led to her sudden death.
