SUMMER SOLSTICE
Summer solstice is when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest north in the Northern Hemisphere (June 20 or 21) or farthest south in the Southern Hemisphere (December 21 or 22).
3 Summer Solstice Facts
1. On the summer solstice, the Sun’s path stops advancing northward each day and appears to “stand” still in the sky before going back the other way.
2. On the solstice, the Sun reaches its northernmost position, reaching the Tropic of Cancer.
3. On the summer solstice, you may observe that the Sun’s path across the sky is curved—NOT a straight line.
Before the rise of Christianity, Slavic, Germanic and Celtic tribes celebrated the midsummer with bonfires, believing that they would boost the sun’s energy and guarantee a good harvest. It was believed that bonfires could also help banish demons and evil spirits.
Today, the celebration of the solstices is mostly strongly associated with Paganism. Magic is thought to be strongest during the Summer Solstice, and it’s also the time when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest. According to Pagan folklore, evil spirits in particular may walk the earth more freely at this time, and in order to ward them off, people wear protective garlands of herbs and flowers.
Now is also the time to realize that things are changing, and you can be proud of the adjustments that you’ve made throughout the winter months, and perhaps even beyond. It’s also important to think about the goals you want to obtain in the latter part of 2022.
This solstice energy is bringing to light that transformation in a way that it’s about appreciating the journey you’ve been on and really understanding the power that you hold within you.
