The U.S. tracked a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that was spotted over American airspace for a couple of days, but the Pentagon decided not to shoot it down over concerns of hurting people on the ground, officials said Thursday.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing was “verifying” reports and later released a statement saying on Friday the balloon was for civilian meteorological and other scientific purposes, and that it regrets that the airship strayed into U.S. airspace.
Canadian officials also said that a high-altitude surveillance balloon was detected in Canadian airspace and its movements are being actively tracked by NORAD.
