The Black Godfather, premiering on Netflix, June 7, explores the prolific career of music executive, entrepreneur and film producer Clarence Avant, and how he’s broken barriers for people of color in the entertainment, music, and sports industries as well as the political climate over the past several decades.
Directed by Reginald Hudlin (Marshall, House Party), and produced by Clarence’s daughter Nicole Avant, The Black Godfather takes an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the expansive network that Clarence Avant has helped create, guide and inspire spanning his impressively long-lasting career; he’s influenced legends such as Bill Withers, Quincy Jones, Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, Kamala Harris, and Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton and has defied notions of what a black executive can do while redefining the industry for entertainers of color altogether.
Escaping from the Jim Crow South and emerging as a powerhouse negotiator on both coasts at a time when deep-seated racism penetrated every corner of America, Clarence is praised by a notable list of famous friends in the film: Snoop Dogg, P. Diddy, Diane Warren, Lionel Ritchie, Suzanne de Passe, David Geffen, Jerry Moss, Sir Lucian Grainge, Cecily Tyson, and Jamie Foxx, amongst others.
And driven by a sense of equality, loyalty, and justice, Clarence continues to influence hit-makers — including Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, L.A. Reid, and Babyface — serving as the go-to adviser in their personal and professional lives.
