LIVE NOW: Hurricane Ian strengthened to a Category 4 storm early Wednesday, churning on a collision course with Florida over warm Gulf waters where 2.5 million people were ordered to evacuate.
As of 5 a.m., Ian had maximum sustained winds of 140 m.p.h. and was located about 75 miles southwest of Naples and 105 miles southwest of Punta Gorda, Florida.
It is the first Category 4 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico since Rita in 2004.
