Dog Training Lead Customisation
DOUBLE UP – see the explainer video here. Double up means you are able to use the lead at half the length. For example, you buy a 20 metre lead, you can use it at 10 metres as well. The lead handle becomes the half way point.
STANDARD TRIGGER HOOK – an old favourite and covers most scenarios. For increased safety chose a carabiner option. Always oil and never allow to stay wet.
LARGER CARABINERS – New additions of larger auto locking are mainly for strength and safety benefits and are recommended for larger stronger dogs, especially those who may suddenly lunge. Swivel (anti-tangle) is compromised here as these are not standard ‘pet’ carabiners.
Although these screw locking safe carabiners are large, they are light, and work well with smaller dogs who wear a harness.
PADDED HANDLE – remember with the padded handle, if you have chosen ‘double-up’, when this function is in use, the padded handle will be at the dog end. I use a soft neoprene that has an almost velvety feel to it and adds a luxury touch to your lead for your handling comfort.

Hi Guys,
I just wanted to express how happy I have been with my 30m long lead over the past three months. It has been a complete game changer for my beagle Ruby and I. We do not let her off lead but wanted to give her the freedom to be a normal beagle on our walks and also be able to tire her out with lots of sniffing and running around. I have attached a little video for you guys. I also just ordered the 5m lead to double up as a 2.5m as well so I can use this on those walks when we are on the streets and need to have a bit more control over her so she does not run on the road lol.
So thank you for making us both happier and healthier 🙂
Regards,
Sean
Handy usage tips
- always attach to a well fitting harness
- never attach to a head collar
- can be used as a trailing lead when safe to do so
Usage technique no. 1 – hold the part of the lead you want the length to be and let the rest trail, then walk your hands up and down the lead lengthening and shortening as you walk. Never let the lead run through your hands as you will get a burn unless you have good gloves on.
Usage technique no. 2 – more like horse lunging and you can see in the images above that with the lead wound up, you can also lengthen and shorten as required.

Are long training leashes good for dogs – Dog Training on a Lead?
The use of long dog leads is a resounding yes, and for good reason. These leads provide a valuable opportunity for your dog to engage in and practice their natural behaviours, all while you maintain control and conduct training amidst various distractions.
Dogs, by nature, have a range of instinctive behaviours that are essential to their well-being. Whether it’s exploring new scents, investigating their surroundings, or enjoying a good run, these activities contribute to their physical and mental health. Long leads offer the perfect balance between granting them the freedom to express these natural behaviours and allowing you to guide and train them effectively.
The extended length of the lead allows your dog to roam and explore, mimicking the experience of being off-leash while still being under your watchful eye. This is particularly beneficial when working on commands or behaviours in real-life scenarios with distractions. It creates a controlled environment where your dog can encounter various stimuli, helping them learn to respond to your cues even in the presence of enticing distractions.
In essence, these long leads facilitate a dynamic training environment, enabling your dog to engage in behaviours that are both instinctive and necessary for their overall well-being. The controlled freedom they provide contributes to a more enriching and effective training experience, fostering a stronger bond between you and your dog. It’s a win-win situation where your dog gets to be a dog, and you get to guide them towards becoming a well-behaved and responsive companion.
What leads do dog trainers recommend?
When it comes to determining the recommended length for a dog training lead, the specific goals of the training play a crucial role. For instance, if the objective is to train a reliable recall, the long dog training lead emerges as an invaluable tool for achieving this essential behaviour and a length of 10-20 metres is ideal.
The extended length of the training lead offers several advantages in recall training. It allows the dog to experience a sense of freedom while still remaining under the owner’s control. This freedom is pivotal in encouraging the dog to explore its surroundings, making the training process more engaging and positive.
The length of the lead becomes a strategic element in creating a controlled environment for recall exercises. It enables the owner to gradually increase the distance between themselves and the dog, providing a progressive approach to building trust and reinforcing the recall command. This step-by-step process helps the dog associate returning promptly with positive experiences, ultimately solidifying the desired behaviour.
Moreover, the long training lead offers a safety net, allowing the owner to intervene swiftly if necessary, especially in distracting or potentially hazardous situations. It strikes a balance between granting the dog autonomy and ensuring that the training environment remains controlled.
In essence, the recommended length for a dog training lead, especially when teaching recall, aligns with the need for a balance between freedom and control. The extended length facilitates effective training sessions, fostering a strong bond between the dog and its owner while reinforcing crucial behaviours for a harmonious and safe companionship.

Ideal training combinations
Why not try our dog walking harness the Marty Dog Harness? An ideal training combo where safety and comfort are paramount. Dog Collar – we recommend collars with shorter leads, but not for longer training leads. This is to eliminate neck injuries with dogs who pull to the end of your dog training lead at speed.
Recommended Lengths for dog training leads
A long dog lead is best used in an open space as opposed to road walking, crowded areas or places where there are lots of obstructions.
5 metres which is 16 feet – any size dog but especially smaller dogs, 19mm is a suitable width for small dogs and due to its’ durability, works well with any size dog.
10 metres which is 32 feet – same as above, this dog training lead is also the best length for actual recall training (coming back when called). It allows for a degree of freedom whilst maintaining control as the handler.
20 metres which is 65 feet – same as 10 metres, ideal for where you have more space. Better for advanced recall training (allowing more distance between dog and handler), also a good length for dogs who are rarely or never allowed off lead.
50 metres which is 164 feet – same as 20 metres, also good for wide open space and beach use. Again, this length is ideal for dogs who are rarely or never allowed off the lead. Popular with Sighthounds, Huskies Beagles etc
The optimal length of a normal road walking lead is around 1.25 metres which is 4.1 feet. A police dog style lead also called a dog training lead or multi-length training lead is around 2 metres to 2.2 metres.
What is the training lead made of?
- made from polypropylene cushion webbing
- strength tested up to 400 kg for 19mm and 450 kg for 25mm
- durable until chewed or abused!
No lead can safely run through your hand at speed without getting a burn, so common sense, lead usage skills and the correct length are important factors. Always do a risk assessment to determine the correct lead length. As you can see in the product options, you can choose a padded handle for your comfort.
Safe use of dog training leads
We don’t recommend attaching the dog training lead to a headcollar or standard neck collar. Depending on the length, a collar may be suitable, however, the longer your lead gets, we recommend a well-fitted harness to prevent injury from jolting if your dog runs to the end of the lead.
Using a harness with a dog training lead also helps keep your dog from stepping over the lead. Our Marty Harness is suitable for use with a long dog training lead.
Safety for the human is important too. So when choosing the length of your dog lead, please remember you need to be able to keep hold of it when your dog runs to the end of it – sometimes at speed. Also please consider burns, either on your hand (never let a dog lead run through your hand) or your ankles, more so in the summer when you might have less protection on your legs.
Are long leads good for dogs?
When it comes to using long dog leads, their effectiveness depends on the specific situation and how responsibly they are used. The primary purpose of a long dog lead is often to provide dogs with a semblance of freedom during walks, especially in areas where they can’t be off-lead. This can be particularly useful for dogs that need to be restrained for various reasons, ensuring they still have the opportunity to explore their surroundings.
Another valuable application of long leads is in training sessions, particularly for commands like coming when called. The extended length allows for controlled practice, helping reinforce positive behaviors and enhance obedience.
In essence, long dog leads can be considered beneficial as they offer dogs a safe way to explore their environment while providing owners with the assurance that their pets won’t wander off. It’s all about striking the right balance between freedom and control during walks or training sessions.

A bit more about Dog Training Leads
Dog training leads, also known as leashes or leads, are essential tools for teaching and managing a dog’s behavior. They come in various lengths, materials, and styles, and are designed to provide control and guidance during training sessions and everyday walks.
The primary purpose of a dog training lead is to keep the dog safely attached to the handler while allowing for communication and control. They play a crucial role in teaching obedience, leash manners, and ensuring the safety of both the dog and the handler. A well-designed training lead can significantly aid in shaping desired behaviors and preventing undesirable ones.
Here are some common types of dog training leads:
- Standard leash: This is the most basic type of lead, typically made of nylon or leather. It usually ranges from 4 to 6 feet in length and has a clip at one end to attach to the dog’s collar or harness. Standard leashes are versatile and suitable for everyday walks and basic training exercises.
- Retractable leash: These leads consist of a thin cord wound inside a plastic handle. They typically have a locking mechanism that allows you to adjust the length of the lead. Retractable leashes provide dogs with more freedom to explore while still maintaining some control. However, they require responsible handling and are not recommended for training purposes, as they can encourage pulling and lack precision.
- Long line: Long lines are extended training leads that can range from 10 to 160 feet in length. They are useful for training recall, distance commands, and off-leash training in controlled environments such as parks or open spaces. Long lines provide more freedom for dogs while still giving handlers the ability to maintain control if necessary.
- Slip lead: A slip lead combines a collar and leash in one piece. It has a loop that slips over the dog’s head, creating a collar that tightens when tension is applied. Slip leads are often used in training exercises where quick control or correction is needed, such as with working or herding dogs. However, they require proper technique and should be used with caution to avoid discomfort or injury.
When choosing a dog training lead, consider factors such as the dog’s size, behavior, and training goals. It’s essential to select a lead made from sturdy materials that can withstand pulling and offer a comfortable grip for the handler. Additionally, always ensure that the lead is securely attached to the dog’s collar or harness to prevent accidental escapes.
Remember that a dog training lead is a tool to aid in training, but it is equally important to employ positive reinforcement techniques, patience, and consistency when working with your dog. Professional guidance from a certified dog trainer can be beneficial in understanding how to effectively use a training lead and develop a well-behaved and obedient canine companion.
A dog training lead is typically made of a strong and durable material such as nylon or leather and comes in various lengths and designs to suit different training purposes.
Here are some key aspects and benefits of using dog training leads:
- Control and Communication: Training leads allow handlers to maintain control over their dogs during training sessions. By attaching the lead to a dog’s collar or harness, the handler gains physical control and can guide the dog’s movements, redirect its attention, or enforce commands. This physical connection also facilitates clear communication between the handler and the dog, enabling the transfer of signals, cues, and corrections effectively.
- Safety and Security: Training leads serve as a safety measure, particularly in outdoor or unfamiliar environments. They prevent dogs from wandering off, chasing after distractions, or approaching potentially dangerous situations. In public places or crowded areas, a lead helps keep the dog close and reduces the risk of accidents or conflicts with other dogs, people, or traffic.
- Training and Behavior Modification: Dog training leads play a crucial role in obedience training and behavior modification programs. They aid in teaching basic commands such as sit, stay, and heel, as well as more advanced exercises like recall or loose-leash walking. With a lead, handlers can guide their dogs through desired behaviors, reinforce positive actions, and discourage undesirable behaviors through gentle corrections or redirects.
- Socialisation and Desensitisation: Training leads are useful for socializing dogs with other animals, people, and different environments. They allow handlers to control the interactions and gradually expose dogs to new experiences, stimuli, and distractions. By using the lead to guide and manage the dog’s responses, handlers can help dogs become more confident, calm, and well-behaved in various situations.
- Rehabilitation and Assistance: For dogs with specific behavioral issues or physical limitations, training leads can provide valuable support. Dogs recovering from injuries, undergoing rehabilitation, or with mobility challenges can benefit from leads with handles or attachments designed for assisting their movements. Additionally, training leads can aid in managing reactive or fearful dogs by allowing handlers to maintain distance, redirect focus, and create a sense of security.
When using a training lead, it’s important to consider the comfort and safety of both the dog and the handler. Choosing the right lead length, thickness, and material is essential, as is ensuring a proper fit and attachment to the dog’s collar or harness. Handlers should also be familiar with different training techniques and use the lead as a tool for positive reinforcement rather than as a means of punishment or excessive control.
In conclusion, dog training leads are valuable tools that facilitate effective training, communication, and safety between dogs and their handlers. By using leads appropriately and in conjunction with positive reinforcement methods, handlers can guide their dogs towards well-mannered behavior, enhance their obedience, and strengthen the bond between human and canine.
