Chief Meteorologist Chris Franklin has the latest on the strengthening Major Hurricane Ian as a potential landfall location tomorrow.
Our focus in the tropics continues to be on Hurricane Ian and the impacts to Florida. As the storm now seems to be taking advantage of the warm water and optimal environment, Ian is quickly intensifying, a category 3 as it moved past western Cuba and into the SE Gulf. The expectation is for the storm to strengthen a bit more, possibly to a category 4, before landfall. Since yesterday, we’ve seen the models and the storm itself begin making more of a projected path toward SW Florida, likely south of Tampa. The latest advisory does have landfall now closer to Ft. Myers. With the storm making landfall sooner, as opposed to later in the week when environmental conditions worsen, it will now likely make landfall as a major hurricane.
