STORYLINE
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown met with Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday in Beijing as part of a trip aimed at encouraging trade and investment between the two countries.
Accompanied by a large trade delegation, Gordon Brown is on his first official visit to China since taking office in June.
Brown brought a high-profile delegation of business leaders to China for a visit focused on expanding economic ties between the countries.
“We have sent out an important piece of information to the world that China and the United Kingdom will jointly push forward our comprehensive strategic partnership,” Hu said during the meeting with Brown.
Earlier on Friday, Brown met Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and discussed the prospects for co-operation between their two countries in energy technologies and carbon emission reduction.
The London Stock Exchange office used Brown’s visit to open its office in Beijing, stepping up its competition with U.S.-based markets to attract listings from the growing number of Chinese companies that are expanding abroad.
China has increasingly become the focus of a charm offensive from Europe and the United States as its explosive growth slows little signs of slowing, despite the headwinds of the global credit crisis.
