Aphasia is a neurological disorder that affects more than 2 million people in America. It affects one’s ability to process language, both in spoken and written form. Aphasia sufferers have trouble speaking and understanding spoken words. They also have trouble reading and writing.

The disorder is caused by brain damage, usually to the left side of the brain. Our brains have two halves, and the left side of the brain is responsible for language processing. Any damage to the left side of the brain, whether it be stroke or trauma, could lead to Aphasia.

Following a traumatic brain injury, a doctor will take an MRI or a CT scan to isolate the affected area. If the patient shows an inability to process language, he or she will be sent to see a speech-pathologist, who can diagnose Aphasia through a series of tests.
